The Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning (CUSUP) was first set up in 1980 as a non-Faculty-based independent academic unit. Following a major restructuring in 2008, the Centre has become the research arm of the Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) in the Faculty of Architecture. Currently it has 10 Honourary Fellows appointed from outside of HKU and 29 Fellows who are academic staff in HKU. The major research themes are:

• Urban GIS and Smart Cities
• Spatial economy and planning
• Housing policy and social development
• Urban policy and governance
• Healthy and Ageing Communities
• One Belt One Road
