The Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) is committed to fostering an intellectually stimulating and culturally diverse campus to enrich students’ total learning experience at HKU. Bridging the boundary between classroom and the world, we provide support services, resources and co-curricular programmes to facilitate students’ learning.
Co-Curriculum
CEDARS co-curriculum programmes provide non-credit bearing and outside classroom learning opportunities for students to achieve, amongst others, the HKU educational aims of fostering students’ ability in intercultural understanding, enhancing their awareness and commitment to global citizenship, and preparing them to be leaders and advocates for improvement of the human condition. The Campus Life Section of CEDARS is committed to enabling students to pursue full and gratifying intellectual and personal development by providing professional student-centred campus support and student services, including a vibrant, dynamic and inclusive campus environment, staunch support to student activities, responsive and caring services to fulfil students’ changing fundamental and financial needs, promotion of student welfare, well-managed physical facilities and effective communication with the university community.

Careers and Placement
The Careers and Placement Section is committed to nurturing students to become global talents possessing professional competencies and entrepreneurial mindset. We also collaborate closely with employers and community partners to identify and recruit quality graduates to create values for their organisations and the community.
We serve as a platform with effective and all-round co-curricular programmes and placement resources which support and empower students to explore and select suitable career options, acquire essential skills for workplace success, pursue a personally rewarding career and make positive impact to society. These include:

Counselling and Person Enrichment
The Counselling and Person Enrichment Section (CEDARS-CoPE) is committed to empowering students to develop their social capability and emotional resilience, and also to capitalise on their character strengths, and to live a fulfilling and psychologically healthy life so that they are able to achieve personal success, overcome life challenges and contribute to the community by demonstrating integrity, sensitivity, and leadership.
To help students live a successful and well-balanced university life, CoPE offers the following services and programmes:
- “Psychometer” (psyax.cedars.hku.hk): Take the psychological tests on university adjustment, learning styles, time management, social life and mental health to gain a better self-understanding and identify ways to achieve university success. Immediate feedback, recommendation and enrichment tips are available.
- Professional Counselling Service: seek early consultation on any personal issues (e.g. adjustment, study-related matters, relationships, mental health, life goals), take steps to overcome personal blocks and recognise your strengths. We have a team of professional Clinical Psychologists and Counsellors. This service is confidential and free-of-charge. To consult a counsellor, please call 3917 8388, email cedars-cope@hku.hk or go to our office. You will receive an immediate 15-20 minute screening assessment conducted by our Duty Counsellor between 10 am and 5 pm (except the lunch hour: 1 pm to 2 pm) on any working days. Afterwards, a full counselling appointment will be scheduled for you within 2 weeks.
- Person Enrichment Programmes: Each semester, CoPE offers a great variety of small group interactive workshops on effective learning, self-management, time-management, social skills and emotional competence. Also watch out for our campus-wide activities to promote mental health and successful university life.
- Support for students with Disabilities and Special Educational Needs (SEN): We provide one-stop, comprehensive and personalised service to students with disabilities or special educational needs (SEN). Contact and register at CEDARS – SEN Support at 3917 8388 or cedars-SEN@hku.hk.
- Peer Support Networks: (1) Join ”Peer English Tutoring”, a peer support initiative for one-to-one conversational English practice jointly managed by Centre for Applied English Studies and CEDARS (2) Register for “Survival Cantonese” to learn 30 essential day-to-day Cantonese phrases from a student tutor (3) Take part in the “SEN Buddy Programme”, a service opportunity to foster mutual understanding between you and your peers with disabilities/Special Education Needs (SEN).

Student Development
The Student Development Section is committed to developing students into global citizens and socially responsible leaders by engaging them in vibrant, innovative and stimulating co-curricular programmes and offering relevant resources and advice.
- Leadership Programme supports student leaders to apply their knowledge, skills and creativity to address pressing global issues. It also encourages and facilities the development of student-initiated projects, NGOs and social enterprises.
- Community Engagement Programme offers opportunities for students to enhance their understanding of the world through involvement in local and overseas communities.
- Global Citizenship Programme offers opportunities for students to interact with global leaders and change makers in lectures, summits, and conventions. It also supports students to participate in prestigious conferences and competitions worldwide.
- HKU Service Network is an online platform specifically designed to support students to contribute to global issues through joining and developing sustainable and innovative service projects. Students may promote their service projects, recruit volunteers, identify partners and opportunities, share experience and even showcase their achievements to attract funding. Students can sign up using their HKU Portal account at cedars.hku.hk/servicenetwork.
Moreover, Student Development Section also provides support for student-initiated projects, NGOs and social enterprises as well as students’ participation in external competitions and conventions.
