HONG KONG INSTITUTE FOR THE HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

The Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, established in 2001 at HKU, has a mission to promote innovative, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research and teaching in the humanities and social sciences, with a focus on China. The Institute seeks to provide a vibrant hub for studying the multi-facets of the Chinese civilization and its long developmental history using both new and traditional approaches.

The Institute offers two postgraduate programmes - Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). These programmes have a strong focus on several themes: the quantitative history of China (including social, economic, political, and institutional history), Chinese business history, Asian religion and spirituality, and Early Chinese History and Archaeology.

Our distinguished teaching faculty includes members and fellows from the Institute, as well as the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, and Social Sciences. Additionally, our programmes are enriched by the participation of visiting professors from overseas universities.

Our programme offers distinctive features that set it apart, including being fully funded with scholarships and generous travel grants, allowing students to focus entirely on their academic pursuits. Participants benefit from our extensive networks with top global research institutions and gain access to internationally acclaimed scholars, enhancing their research experience and opportunities for collaboration. Strategically located in the vibrant heart of Asia, the programme allows students to immerse themselves in a thriving and innovative interdisciplinary research environment, fostering creativity and ground-breaking discoveries.
