HONG KONG INSTITUTE FOR THE HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

The Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences was founded in 2001 with the primary objective of promoting innovative, interdisciplinary research and education in the humanities and social sciences related to Chinese and Asian studies. The Institute serves as a dynamic platform for the study of societies and cultures in China and across Asia and collaborates closely with leading academic institutions around the world.

The Institute offers two postgraduate programmes - Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). These programmes have a strong focus on several themes: the quantitative history of China (including social, economic, political, and institutional history), business history, hubs and mobilities, and religious studies.

Our distinguished teaching faculty includes members and fellows from the Institute, as well as the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, and Social Sciences. Additionally, our programs are enriched by the participation of visiting professors from overseas universities.

Original research and knowledge discovery are the Institute’s core mission. We are committed to providing a stimulating and dynamic environment that fosters critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and creativity. Our programmes are designed to challenge our students and help them develop the skills needed to become leaders in their fields.
