CENTRE FOR SPORTS AND EXERCISE

Centre for Sports and Exercise (CSE) offers non-academic sport & recreation, health & fitness and competitive sports programmes.

The Centre employs qualified staff to manage the University's sports facilities and promote physical activity through a range of initiatives and programmes such as Exercise is Medicine on Campus (EIMOC), Medfit, Active Health Classes, and various Uni-Sports and Uni-Adventure programmes. These offerings aim to encourage student participation in leisure-time physical activities and foster life-long physical activity lifestyle.

Programmes and Courses

The Uni-sports & Uni-Adventure short courses are available during Semesters I and II, as well as in the summer. These courses cover a wide range of activities, with qualified instruction and equipment provided at a nominal fee to students. Our Medfit Exercise programmes cover a range of medical related exercise courses, with our Active Health Classes providing a variety of different exercise opportunities for general populations. Full information on enrolment for courses can be obtained from the CSE website at www.cse.hku.hk/.

Exercise is Medicine on Campus (EIMOC)

Through EIMOC initiative, CSE has established a partnership with University Health Service (UHS) and Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) to promote physical activity as a vital sign of health via a medical-to-exercise referral network. Individuals in need of targeted physical activity to address certain health concerns may receive a referral from HKU medical to HKU exercise professionals.

HKU was the first campus in Asia to be recognised through the American College of Sports Medicine as a Gold Level Campus, demonstrating HKU’s commitment to actively engaging in and providing physical activity opportunities (education and programmes) to enhance staff and students’ healthy and active lifestyles.

Competitive Sports and Athlete Support

CSE supports intramural sports including the inter-hall and inter-faculty competitions, which are coordinated by the Sports Association and Sports Clubs under the Co-curricular Support Office.

In addition, twenty-seven University Sports Teams, overseen by CSE, represent HKU in Interuniversity Competitions organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China as well as by various national sports associations.

To support these sports teams, CSE provides a broad scope of support, including coaching, facilities, overseas competitions/training support, High-Performance training, sports-specific fitness assessment and consultations.

Athlete Recruitment and Career Development

CSE works closely with the Admissions Office to identify and recruit talented young athletes through the Top Athletes Direct Admission Scheme and Sports Scholarship Scheme. Aiming to assist athletes to pursue studies while training and competing for the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong National teams. On top of that, CSE is also committed to support students who are interested in careers in sports industry by offering coaching bursaries and sports volunteering programmes, aiming to provide various education and placement opportunities for students.

CSE operates Stanley Ho Sports Centre situated at Sandy Bay (mainly outdoor sports facilities). Sports facilities at the Stanley Ho Sports Centre include a floodlit athletics stadium with 400m synthetic running track, an outdoor basketball court, an Olympic size 50m outdoor swimming pool, one grass pitch, three floodlit artificial turf pitches, six outdoor tennis courts, an indoor fitness centre and table-tennis room, golf driving bays and a softball diamond. Apart from Stanley Ho Sports Centre, CSE also operates two satellite fitness centres – CSE ACTIVE (Centennial Campus) and HKU B-Active (Shek Tong Tsui – MTR-HKU station exit B1), both of which are state-of-the-art fitness facilities designed to further promote the health and fitness of the university community. Also located at HKU B-Active is the CSE’s Active Health Clinic, which is a specialized health and fitness clinic providing professional advice, health and fitness testing and training in the use of physical activity for chronic disease prevention and management.
