As the demand for the subsidised public healthcare services is very high and the University would only provide primary healthcare services, you are strongly advised to get your own medical insurance irrespective of your length of stay in Hong Kong. If you plan to travel to other countries for personal business during your study in HKU, you are advised to purchase an insurance policy with worldwide coverage.

Many insurance policies are strictly on a reimbursement basis. Non-local students, even with insurance coverage, may have to settle the medical bill first before you can claim reimbursement. It is important for you to check carefully with your insurance company on the extent of coverage and claim procedures, and set aside a sum of money for contingencies.
