Centre for Sports and Exercise (CSE) offers non-academic sport & recreation, health & fitness and competitive sports programmes.
The Centre employs qualified staff to manage the University's sports facilities and promote physical activity through a range of offerings including our Exercise is Medicine on Campus initiative and sport and recreation programmes under Uni-Sports, Uni-Adventure and Sports-for-All. These offerings aim to provide opportunities for students to participate in leisure-time physical activities and to develop life-long physical activity skills.
The Sport and Recreation short-courses and seminars of the Uni-sports & Uni-Adventure programmes and Sports-for-All programmes are offered during Semesters I and II and in the summer months. Courses are offered in a wide range of activities for which qualified instruction and equipment are provided at a nominal fee to students. Full information on enrolment for courses can be obtained from the CSE website at www.cse.hku.hk/.
Under our Exercise is Medicine on Campus (EIMOC) initiative the CSE has established a partnership with University Health Service (UHS) to promote physical activity as a vital sign of health via a medical-to-exercise referral network. Individuals in need of targeted physical activity to address certain health concerns may receive a referral from HKU medical to HKU exercise professionals. HKU was the first campus in Asia to be recognised through the American College of Sports Medicine as a Gold Level Campus, demonstrating HKU’s commitment to actively engaging in and providing physical activity opportunities (education and programmes) to enhance staff and students’ healthy and active lifestyles.
Intramural Competitive sports opportunities are provided through the inter-hall and inter-faculty competitions. Some of the twenty-four sports clubs organised by the Sports Association under Student's Union and their respective University Teams represent HKU at Interuniversity Competitions organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China and in other inter-varsity competitions. The CSE applies varying levels of support to University Teams by providing coaching, facilities and other subsidies. The University's Top Athletes Direct Admission Scheme and Sports Scholarship Scheme allow talented local athletes to pursue studies while training and competing for the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong National teams. The CSE High Performance Training Unit is also available to provide strength and conditioning advice and training to athletes of University Sports teams.
The CSE operates Stanley Ho Sports Centre situated at Sandy Bay (mainly outdoor sports facilities). Sports facilities at the Stanley Ho Sports Centre include a floodlit athletics stadium with 400m synthetic running track, an outdoor basketball court, an Olympic size 50m outdoor swimming pool, one grass pitch, three floodlit artificial turf pitches, six outdoor tennis courts, an indoor fitness centre and table-tennis room, golf driving bays and a softball diamond. Apart from Stanley Ho Sports Centre, CSE also operates two satellite fitness centres - ACTIVE (Centennial Campus) and HKU B-Active (newly opened in February 2021 in Shek Tong Tsui – MTR-HKU station exit B1), both of which are state-of-the-art fitness facilities designed to further promote the health and fitness of the university community. Also located at HKU B-Active is the CSE’s Active Health Clinic, which is a specialized health and fitness clinic providing professional advice, health and fitness testing and training in the use of physical activity for chronic disease prevention and management. The Active Health Clinic also offers placement opportunities to students interested in exercise science and fitness. Since early 2023, CSE has also introduced new Multi-Purpose Rooms and a mini-gym at Ho Tim Hall and Suen Chi Sun Hall for students’ various sports activities.
All full-time students of the University of Hong Kong are eligible to use the sports facilities. Students are advised to seek advice if necessary before using sports facilities or fitness equipment in order to prevent avoidable sports injuries. Questions about using the sport facilities or equipment can be directed to our friendly sports centre staff.
