For all registered students who sustain injuries or incur sickness within or outside Hong Kong during the course of University business, the University has arranged a general insurance coverage for medical expenses incurred by students up to the limit of $5,000 within Hong Kong and $25,000 outside Hong Kong under the Group Personal Accident Insurance Policy and up to the limit of $400,000 under the Corporate Business Travel Insurance Policy when travelling outside Hong Kong. For reimbursement of medical expenses incurred, claimable amounts shall subject to insurance policy terms, and students are required to provide to the Finance and Enterprises Office the original receipted medical bills (endorsed by a certified medical doctor with diagnosis indicated) together with a certification from the Head of Department concerned that the student was undergoing official activities arranged by the University at that time. For details on the insurance coverage, please contact the Finance and Enterprises Office through e-mail at feo_insurance@hku.hk or login to your HKU Portal account to find out more information about HKU’s Travel Insurance by following the path: SIS Menu -> Financial Services -> FEO Info and Hotlines -> Finance and Enterprises Office -> Insurance Information for Students. The Finance and Enterprises Office must be informed of all potential, possible or actual insurance claims within 30 days from the date of incident or as soon as practical by means of the foresaid email in order to avoid a claim being declined by the insurer for the reason of late notification.
In addition, if a student is in need of serious emergency assistance such as in-patient hospital treatments due to bodily injury or sickness, emergency medical evacuation and / or repatriation service etc. while staying overseas, the student must directly contact the 24-hour Emergency Assistance Service provided by the insurer.
Students should note that the University would only provide standard travel insurance coverage, and would not insure any personal cash or property of students in any circumstances. If additional or special insurance cover is required, it is entirely up to the student concerned to make personal arrangement at their own expense.
HKU has signed an agreement with International SOS (Intl.SOS) to provide general assistance, local information such nearby clinic/pharmacy, police station, translation services etc. or travel advice to all HKU students. Students are required to use their HKU Portal ID to register for the service with CEDARS before departure. Intl.SOS is NOT an insurance company.
HKU students doing study abroad programmes that are arranged by the University will be covered by the University’s Group Travel Insurance, which provides basic benefits to the students. For request of urgent/emergency assistance such as the need of advanced cash in case of loss of money, financial/payments guarantee, immediate medical care and/or hospitalization if bodily injury or sickness, or emergency rescue etc., you should contact our insurer “Zurich” Emergency Assistant Services.
You are still strongly advised to arrange your own travel insurance that better suit your needs.
