The Centre for Sports and Exercise (CSE) provides a wide range of non-academic sport & recreation, health & fitness and competitive sports programmes to support the well‑being and holistic development of the HKU community.
The Centre employs qualified staff to manage the University's sports facilities and promote physical activity through a range of offerings including our Exercise is Medicine on Campus initiative and sport and recreation programmes under Uni-Sports and, Uni-Adventure. These offerings aim to provide opportunities for students to participate in leisure-time physical activities and to develop life-long physical activity skills.
Leisure‑based participation opportunities are offered through the Uni-sports & Uni-Adventure programmes during Semesters I and II and in the summer months. Courses cover a wide range of activities, with qualified instruction and equipment provided at a nominal fee to students, enabling students to explore diverse physical activities, develop practical skills, and establish lifelong exercise habits.
Under our Exercise is Medicine on Campus (EIMOC) initiative the CSE has established a partnership with University Health Service (UHS) to promote physical activity as a vital sign of health via a medical-to-exercise referral network. Individuals in need of targeted physical activity to address certain health concerns may receive a referral from HKU medical to HKU exercise professionals. HKU was the first campus in Asia to be recognised through the American College of Sports Medicine as a Gold Level Campus, demonstrating HKU’s commitment to actively engaging in and providing physical activity opportunities (education and programmes) to enhance staff and students’ healthy and active lifestyles.
Intramural Competitive sports opportunities are provided through the inter-hall and inter-faculty competitions. TeamHKU, comprising 27 sports teams managed by CSE, represents HKU at Interuniversity Competitions organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China and in other inter-varsity competitions. CSE applies varying levels of support to University Teams by providing coaching, facilities, overseas training & competition support, and other subsidies. The University's Top Athletes Direct Admission Scheme and Sports Scholarship Scheme allow talented local athletes to pursue studies while training and competing for the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong National teams. The CSE High Performance Training Unit is also available to provide strength and conditioning advice and training to athletes of University Sports teams.
In addition, CSE supports student development through coaching bursary schemes and student volunteering opportunities, providing pathways for students to gain practical experience, develop leadership skills, and contribute to sports and physical activity programmes within the University community.
CSE operates a range of sports and fitness facilities across the HKU campus, including the Stanley Ho Sports Centre at Sandy Bay, Henry Fok Swimming Pool, CSE ACTIVE and HKU B-Active (in Shek Tong Tsui – MTR - HKU station exit B1), which also houses the CSE’s Active Health Clinic, a specialized health and fitness clinic providing professional advice, health and fitness testing and training in the use of physical activity for chronic disease prevention and management. The Active Health Clinic also offers placement opportunities to students interested in exercise science and fitness. In addition, CSE operates multi-purpose rooms at Jockey Club Village I and Jockey Club Village II, with a mini-gym available at Jockey Club Village II.
CSE is also preparing for the opening of the new Pokfield Campus Sports Complex, which is expected to be ready for service in the fourth quarter of 2027. If applicable, part-time students of the University of Hong Kong are eligible to use our sports facilities. Students are advised to seek advice if necessary before using sports facilities or fitness equipment in order to prevent avoidable sports injuries. Questions about using the sport facilities or equipment can be directed to our friendly sports centre staff.
