Institute of Human Performance |
The Institute of Human Performance (IHP) offers an undergraduate degree (BSc Exercise and Health) and postgraduate training (MPhil and PhD degrees), as well as sports and recreation programmes, health and fitness programmes and a competitive sport programme. The Institute employs qualified staff to manage the University's sports facilities and promote physical activity through sport and recreation programmes called Uni-Sports and Uni-Adventure. These programmes, offered during Semesters I and II and during the summer months, aim to introduce students to the benefits of physical activity and to provide opportunities to acquire life-long sport and recreation skills. Courses are offered in a wide range of activities for which qualified instruction and equipment are provided. Full information on enrolment for courses can be obtained from the Flora Ho Sports Centre and on the IHP website at http://www.ihp.hku.hk. Competitive sport opportunities are provided through inter-hall and inter-faculty competitions and through twenty-four sports clubs and University teams that are organized by the Sports Association of the Student's Union and supported by IHP provision of coaching, facilities and subsidies. University teams compete in events organized by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China and other inter-varsity competitions. The University's Sports Scholarship Scheme allows talented local athletes to pursue studies while training and competing for the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong National teams. The IHP operates two main HKU sports complexes: the Flora Ho and Lindsay Ride Sports Centres that are situated near the Main Campus on Pokfulam Road (mainly indoor sports facilities) and the Stanley Ho Sports Centre that is situated at Sandy Bay (mainly outdoor sports facilities). Located within the Flora Ho/Lindsay Ride Sports Centres are two large sports halls and a variety of other multi-purpose sport and recreation areas. Also available are a 25m outdoor swimming pool and a fitness and weight training room. Sports facilities at the Stanley Ho Sports Centre include an athletics stadium with a floodlit synthetic running track, an outdoor basketball court, an Olympic size 50m outdoor swimming pool, two grass pitches, two floodlit artificial turf pitches, an indoor health and fitness centre, golf driving bays and a softball diamond. A total of fourteen tennis courts are managed by the Institute at four locations. Also located at Stanley Ho Sports Centre is the IHP’s Active Health Clinic, which provides specialized health and fitness programmes and advice. The Clinic offers placement opportunities to students interested in exercise science and fitness. If applicable, part-time students of the University of Hong Kong are eligible to use our sports facilities. Users are advised to seek advice or attend proper training before using sports facilities and fitness equipment to prevent avoidable sports injuries. Please do not hesitate to contact IHP Sports Centre staff for assistance related to the using of the sports facilities and equipment.
