Hall Orientation Programmes

Halls / college students’ associations organise orientation programmes with prior approval by the Warden and CEDARS for new residents before the start of the academic year. While there are no negative consequences for skipping the programmes, new residents are strongly expected and encouraged to participate in the orientation programmes for smooth adaptation. During the orientation, you will become acquainted with other new residents and current residents, learn about the history and culture of your hall, and ways of learning, behaving and living that are conducive to the development of the attributes of HKU graduates as set out in the six educational aims of HKU.
The University has established the following principles in relation to hall orientation programmes:
(a)

the main objective of hall orientation programmes is to assist and to facilitate residents' transition into a new living and learning environment;

| (b) |
organizers of hall orientation programmes should recognize residents' rights to give priority to their academic programme and studies;
|
| (c) |
no penalty or pressure should be imposed on residents for incompletion of any part of the orientation programmes; and
|
| (d) |
at no time during the orientation programme and the period in residence should the dignity and rights of an individual be infringed upon.

| (e) |
seniority must not be used to create any form of power imbalance or privilege. Such practices undermine equal rights and may lead to the exploitation of others.

| (f) |
all activities must be strictly free from any form of discrimination, harassment, or prejudice. There shall be no discrimination against any individual based on characteristics including, but not limited to, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, age, or disability.

New residents who feel that any part of the orientation activities is in violation of the principles listed above can report their observation to the warden concerned, or the Dean of Student Affairs. Additionally, hall/college students' associations have to comply with Orientation Regulations for Student Societies 2026.
