CENTRE FOR SPORTS AND EXERCISE

Centre for Sports and Exercise (CSE) offers non-academic sport and recreation programmes, health and fitness and competitive sport programmes.

The Centre employs qualified staff to manage the University's sports facilities and promote physical activity through Sport and Recreation Programmes called Uni-Sports and Uni-Adventure. These programmes are offered during Semesters I and II and during the summer months. The programmes aim to provide opportunities to participate in leisure-time activities and to develop life-long physical activity skills. Courses are offered in a wide range of activities for which qualified instruction and equipment are provided at a nominal fee to students. Full information on enrolment for courses can be obtained from the Flora Ho Sports Centre and on the CSE’s website at http://www.cse.hku.hk.

Competitive sports opportunities are provided through the inter-hall and inter-faculty competitions and through the activities of twenty-four sports clubs and University teams that are organised by the Sports Association of the Student's Union. The CSE supports these teams by providing coaching, facilities and subsidies. University teams compete in events organized by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China and in other inter-varsity competitions. The University's Sports Scholarship Scheme allows talented local athletes to pursue studies while training and competing for the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong National teams.

The CSE operates two main HKU sports complexes: the linked Flora Ho and Lindsay Ride Sports Centres that are situated near the Main Campus on Pokfulam Road (mainly indoor sports facilities) and the Stanley Ho Sports Centre situated at Sandy Bay (mainly outdoor sports facilities). Located within the Flora Ho/Lindsay Ride Sports Centres are two large sports halls and a variety of other multi-purpose sport specific areas. Also available are a 25m outdoor swimming pool and a fitness and weight training room. Sports facilities at the Stanley Ho Sports Centre include an athletics stadium with a floodlit synthetic running track, an outdoor basketball court, an Olympic size 50m outdoor swimming pool, one grass pitch, three floodlit artificial turf pitches, an indoor health and fitness centre, golf driving bays and a softball diamond. altogether, the CSE manages a total of fourteen tennis courts at four locations. Also located at Stanley Ho Sports Centre is the CSE’s Active Health Clinic, which is a specialized health and fitness clinic providing professional advice and training in the use of physical activity for chronic disease prevention and management. The Active Health Clinic also offers placement opportunities to students interested in exercise science and fitness. In January 2014, the CSE also opened ACTIVE (Centennial Campus), which is a state-of-the-art fitness facility designed to further promote the health and fitness of the university community.

All full time students of the University of Hong Kong are eligible to use the sports facilities. Students are advised to take instruction before using sports facilities or fitness equipment in order to prevent avoidable sports injuries. Questions about using the sport facilities or equipment can be directed to our friendly sports centre staff.
